Choosing the right sew-in foundation
A sew-in is only as comfortable and durable as the braided foundation beneath it. The braid pattern must support the intended part, leave-out, closure placement, ponytail access, and finished direction of the hair. At Katty Hair Studio in Brentwood, we also look at the client’s perimeter density and any areas that should not carry added tension.
Traditional leave-out sew-ins and closure sew-ins solve different needs. Leave-out can create direct texture blending but requires regular care of the exposed natural hair; a closure reduces exposed hair at the top but needs accurate lace placement and a track pattern built around it. The consultation identifies which approach matches the client’s routine and desired finish.
The process
Sew-in installation and weft placement
The appointment begins with detangled, prepared natural hair and a braid pattern that distributes the installation across stable sections. Wefts are measured to each row, secured without crowding the scalp, and layered in the direction needed for the final cut. Thread tension is checked as the service progresses so the foundation feels secure without becoming unnecessarily tight.
Once the wefts are installed, the extension hair is blended, cut, and styled as a complete shape. Clients visiting our Bladensburg Road salon from Hyattsville, Mount Rainier, or Cottage City leave knowing where the foundation sits, how to reach the scalp during cleansing, and how to dry the braided base thoroughly.
When it helps
Caring for a sew-in between appointments
A sew-in needs routine scalp access, careful detangling, and complete drying after cleansing. Hair should be separated into manageable sections, supported near the track while brushing, and wrapped or braided before sleep to reduce tangling. Leaving the braided foundation damp can create odor and discomfort, so drying time must be part of the maintenance routine.
A maintenance check is appropriate when tracks feel loose, the leave-out no longer blends, buildup is difficult to reach, or the foundation has grown away from the scalp. We do not recommend tightening an old foundation indefinitely; removal, scalp care, and a fresh braid pattern are often the safer next step.
Why Katty
Professional sew-in removal in Brentwood
Removal requires clear visibility of the sewing thread and the natural braid beneath it. Cutting blindly through a track can also cut the client’s own hair, which is why each thread is isolated and released before the weft is lifted. Retained shed hair is then detangled gradually rather than pulled through in one pass.
At 3816 Bladensburg Rd, sew-in removal can be followed by cleansing, conditioning, and an assessment of the natural hair before another installation is considered. The break between services, if one is needed, is based on scalp comfort, shedding, breakage, and the condition of the perimeter—not a preset sales schedule.

Frequently asked questions about Sew-In Hair Extensions in Brentwood, MD
Clear answers now make your consultation easier later.
Do sew-in extensions require leave-out?
Not always. A traditional sew-in may use leave-out for blending, while a closure sew-in can cover the top section. The best option depends on the desired part, natural-hair condition, texture match, and home styling routine.
How should I wash my scalp with a sew-in?
Clean the scalp in accessible sections without rough scrubbing, rinse thoroughly, and dry the braided foundation completely. Katty Hair Studio reviews product placement and drying techniques after installation.
What should I bring to a sew-in consultation?
Bring reference photos and details about the bundles or closure you plan to use, including length, texture, and quantity. Also share recent braid, relaxer, color, and extension history so the foundation can be planned responsibly.
